Senior Programs
Purpose
South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Programs are located in the John T. “Doc” and Mary Tynan Senior Center in our main building at 136 H Street in South Boston. Programs and services for South Boston’s senior population have been a Neighborhood House hallmark since the early 1940’s when a group of women asked to begin a mothers’ club in our original home at 521 East Seventh Street.
Today, our Senior Program is a full-time program that brings together neighborhood seniors, both men and women, in a unique and personal community space. Here older adults find services and activities that reflect their interests, experiences and skills; educate them in senior related issues; support their health and independence; and encourage their involvement in the community.

Program
The focus of the South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Program is to provide our seniors with opportunities to be active, healthy, informed and involved members of their community. Our programs, services, supports, referrals and educational offerings are designed to foster the dignity, health and independence of our seniors.
One of our most popular and important service areas focuses on enhancing the physical well-being of our seniors through exercise, dance, nutrition and yoga classes. The Neighborhood House Senior Center collaborates with the Boston Athletic Club to offer Swim Aerobics and Senior Strut classes at the BAC, while here at the Neighborhood House, on-site classes include Osteoporosis Prevention Weight Strengthening and Exercise three times per week and weekly Yoga and Zumba Gold classes.
The South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Program also offers monthly informational workshops and lectures on a variety of financial, legal, health and environmental topics of importance to seniors, weekly visits from the SHINE office for assistance with medical insurance information, bi- weekly shopping trips, a bowling league, art and knitting groups, presentations and occasional research study groups from various teaching hospitals, Bingo, line dancing, cards, and Monday afternoon movies. The Kit Clark Lunch program is available Monday-Thursday and is open to all seniors in the community.
The South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Program was the proud recipient of the City of Boston’s 2010 “Outstanding Neighborhood Senior Services Award” presented by the Honorable Thomas M. Menino in recognition of the Center’s long history and excellence in programming.
